Nikki James

Nikki James

Lead Vocals

Nikki James has been a fixture on the Detroit music scene for more than 20 years, and is widely acknowledged among her peers and fans as one of the most powerful and dynamic blues/rock singer/performers to tame a stage in the Motor City. Considering the legendary level of talent that has always defined Detroit, this is no small accomplishment. Musicians worldwide know that if an artist can make it in Detroit they can make it anywhere, and Nikki James made it to the top of the local music scene as an artist capable of delivering the kind of consistently entertaining performances that could please those notoriously critical Detroit audiences. Her showmanship and raw talent helped her to build a sizable and loyal fan base throughout the region that would regularly support her performances whenever and wherever she would appear.

Nikki James represents the best of Detroit music.

A Short Story

Nikki James born Nicole Rene DeLano on Detroit July 31st 1967. Born during the Detroit race riots her family relocated to Pembine Wisconsin and later to Michigan's Upper Peninsula - Rockland Michigan where Nikki James would graduate from Ontonagon High School in May 1985. The day after graduation Nikki James would relocate back to Detroit in pursuit of music. Nikki James would meet guitarist Doug Deming in 1990 and form a band called Blue Suit. In 1992 Nikki and Doug would part ways for creative differences and Nikki formed The Flamethrowers with guitarist Rick Jacobi. Nikki worked with a few different guitarists and in 1993 would be introduced to guitarist Dave Mazzara through mutual friend and legendary guitarist Jim McCarty. Dave played formerly with Mitch Ryder’s younger brother Mark. Nikki James and the Flamethrowers - Brenda (Brandy)Rubio - support vocals, Frank (Big Bottom) Rubio - bass and Steve (Bam Bam) Kohn - drums would find Dave the perfect fit. Nikki James and The Flamethrowers performed 150 plus show’s a year for about 3 years until guitarist Dave Mazzara left the group in 1996. Later that year guitarist Dale Showler would replace Dave Mazzara and bassist Tim Tucker would join. Enter the new Flamethrowers Nikki James, Dale Showler, Tim Tucker & Steve Kohn. Together Dale Showler and Nikki James co- produced their 1999 release Cleanin’ House - Fat Girl Records on 11 original Nikki James tunes. They disbanded in 2000. Nikki would go on to manage Detroit icon Thornetta Davis in 2001, this was a productive venture that came to an end in 2004. Utilizing her music connections in 2005 Nikki launched the booking agency Nominee Entertainment. With 75 of Detroit's premier artists on her roster she would book the 2006 XL Super Bowl Ticket Holders Party. Nominee Entertainment would scale down with the recession and Nikki would once again start performing. Nikki James attended a jam session at a local hot spot in Royal Oak Michigan Memphis Smoke where she would sit in with Supersession's band leader Mark Pasman of 94.7 WCSX Classic Rock Radio. Mark Pasman had a radio show "Anything Blue Will Do" on Sunday nights for 26 years where Nikki was a guest a couple of times. Mark Pasman was offered performance spots at classic rock concerts and blues festivals through WCSX radio and extended the invitation on several occasions for Nikki James to front the Super Session's at some of his high profile performances. A few Super Session recording from the Memphis Smoke jam sessions would follow. Nikki James was featured on Detroit Super Sessions release 2006 / Venture records on two tracks. A fem-fetal version of Freddie Kings “Goin Down” and BB Kings “Evil”. Nikki's most recent performance with Mark Pasman's Super Sessions was New Year’s Eve 2015 with Detroit's own Laith Al Saadi at Boo’s In Royal Oak. Nikki James would also be invited to perform with McCarty & Friends at Callihan’s Music Hall, Auburn Hills MI for McCarty & Friends along with the legendary guitarist for Etta James Bobby Murray. In 2013 Nikki James returned to the studio and started recording a new release that features several premier Detroit artists.
